COVID-19 recovery continues to be a key priority for many countries across the Asia-Pacific region. In consideration of this, and noting that it could be some time before international travel has returned to normal, the Government of Australia and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) have agreed that the next Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) will be held in-person in Brisbane in the second half of 2022.

In the lead-up to APMCDRR 2022, the Asia-Pacific Action Plan 2021-2024 for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction will be developed.  The Action Plan will seek to accelerate disaster risk reduction in the region, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing impacts of climate change.  The Plan will be launched in the second half of 2021, at a virtual event, hosted by the Australian Government and UNDRR.

The APMCDRR aims to promote coordination and cooperation across the region and assesses progress made in the implementation of the Sendai Framework, the global blueprint to reduce disaster risk and losses, at the regional level.  APMCDRR 2022 will include ministerial meetings, thematic sessions, and partner-led public forums and will result in a political declaration and commitments to raise the region’s ambitions to achieve disaster resilience.
